THE NUMBERS, EXPLAINED
How to use this calculator.
Expected sales are allowed to be fractional. Donation value is a user-chosen comparison score, not cash revenue or a tax benefit.
Start with your inputs
Enter unsold units, regular price per unit, markdown percentage (%), assumed fraction sold at markdown (%), chosen non-cash donation value per remaining unit. Keep amounts in the units shown on each field. The example is a starting point, not a recommended value.
| Input | Example value |
|---|---|
| Unsold units | 100 |
| Regular price per unit | 3 |
| Markdown percentage (%) | 50 |
| Assumed fraction sold at markdown (%) | 80 |
| Chosen non-cash donation value per remaining unit | 0.5 |
A worked example
With the example inputs above, markdown selling price is 1.5. Change the inputs to explore your own scenario.
| Result | Example answer |
|---|---|
| Markdown selling price | 1.5 |
| Expected cash recovered | 120 |
| Remaining units expected | 20 |
| Cash plus chosen donation value | 130 |
How this is calculated
Markdown selling price
Apply percentage markdown to regular price.
Expected cash recovered
Multiply expected markdown sales by markdown price.
Remaining units expected
Subtract expected sold fraction from unsold stock.
Cash plus chosen donation value
Add expected cash and user-valued donation of remaining units.

Assumptions and limits
Expected sales are allowed to be fractional. Donation value is a user-chosen comparison score, not cash revenue or a tax benefit.
Calculations use the values you enter. Blank or invalid inputs show an error instead of silently substituting zero. Results are displayed to useful precision; calculations retain the underlying numeric precision.
Questions about this tool
What does the result tell me?
Markdown selling price; Expected cash recovered; Remaining units expected; Cash plus chosen donation value. The result applies to the method and inputs described above. Check the units and assumptions before using it in a decision.
Why might another calculator differ?
Differences in units, rounding, timing or model definitions can produce different answers. Compare the input definitions and the method, rather than only the final number. For this tool: Expected sales are allowed to be fractional. Donation value is a user-chosen comparison score, not cash revenue or a tax benefit.
