Bottleneck throughput calculator

Calculate stage capacities and bottleneck throughput with your own figures.

Your numbers

Use the units shown. Results update as you change valid inputs.

Use stage capacities and bottleneck throughput to compare changes to your inputs. The method and limits below explain the scope.

Examples

Examples

Try the starting example

Stages JSON [ID,cycle seconds,machine count,availability fraction]
[["A",30,2,0.9],["B",40,1,1]]
Stage capacities (units/hour)
[["A",216],["B",90]]
Bottleneck throughput (units/hour)
90
Limiting stage IDs
B

Try another scenario

Stages JSON [ID,cycle seconds,machine count,availability fraction]
[["A",30,2,0.9],["B",20,1,1]]
Stage capacities (units/hour)
[["A",216],["B",180]]
Bottleneck throughput (units/hour)
180
Limiting stage IDs
B
Calculation method

Calculation method

Stage capacities (units/hour)

3600*machines*availability/cycle for each stage.

Bottleneck throughput (units/hour)

Minimum stage capacity.

Limiting stage IDs

All stages tied for minimum capacity.

Symbols and units
a
Stages JSON [ID,cycle seconds,machine count,availability fraction]

Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.

Assumptions & limits

Assumptions & limits

  • Steady fluid capacity with independent parallel identical machines per stage. Ignores blocking, starvation, buffers, setup and yield losses. Supported limits: 1..100 stages; positive cycle, positive integer machines; availability in (0,1].
