Examples
Try the starting example
- Participants: name, supplied gear allowance kg
- A,8 B,6
- Gear: name, mass kg, locked carrier name or any
- Tent,4,A Stove,2,any Food,3,any Water,2,any
- Proposed gear assignment
- A: Tent + Water; B: Food + Stove
- Assigned mass by participant (kg)
- A: 6; B: 5
- Unassigned gear
- None
- Total assigned gear mass (kg)
- 11
- Unused entered carrying allowance (kg)
- 3
Try another scenario
- Participants: name, supplied gear allowance kg
- A,8 B,4
- Gear: name, mass kg, locked carrier name or any
- Tent,4,A Stove,2,any Food,3,any Water,2,any
- Proposed gear assignment
- A: Tent + Stove + Water; B: Food
- Assigned mass by participant (kg)
- A: 8; B: 3
- Unassigned gear
- None
- Total assigned gear mass (kg)
- 11
- Unused entered carrying allowance (kg)
- 1
Calculation method
Calculation method
Proposed gear assignment
Assign locked items first in input order, then shared items heaviest first to the least-loaded participant who can fit the whole item.
Assigned mass by participant (kg)
Sum item masses per participant.
Unassigned gear
Locked items exceeding their named allowance or shared items the greedy rule cannot fit.
Total assigned gear mass (kg)
Sum assigned item weights.
Unused entered carrying allowance (kg)
Sum participant allowances − assigned weight; excludes the unassigned items.
Symbols and units
- a
- Participants: name, supplied gear allowance kg
- b
- Gear: name, mass kg, locked carrier name or any
Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.
Assumptions & limits
Assumptions & limits
- An indivisible gear-allocation heuristic using allowances you supply. It does not recommend safe pack weights, account for personal body weight or optimise all feasible assignments.
