Camping water carry plan calculator

Calculate water at departure of each leg and total planned consumption with your own figures.

Your numbers

Use the units shown. Results update as you change valid inputs.

Use water at departure of each leg and total planned consumption to compare changes to your inputs. The method and limits below explain the scope.

Examples

Examples

Try the starting example

Legs: name, days, resupply at end yes or no
A,2,no B,1,yes C,1,yes
User-selected water per person per day (L)
3
People
2
Reserve above consumption per resupply block (%)
20
Available water-carry capacity (L)
20
Water at departure of each leg (L)
A: 21.6; B: 9.6; C: 7.2
Total planned consumption (L)
24
Peak starting water carry (L)
21.6
Capacity gap at peak (L)
1.6
Water reserve remaining at final leg end (L)

Try another scenario

Legs: name, days, resupply at end yes or no

Water at departure of each leg (L)
A: 10.8; B: 4.8; C: 3.6
Total planned consumption (L)
12
Peak starting water carry (L)
10.8
Capacity gap at peak (L)

Water reserve remaining at final leg end (L)

Calculation method

Calculation method

Water at departure of each leg (L)

At each refill, load consumption through the next listed resupply plus the selected reserve. Subtract actual planned consumption leg by leg, leaving reserve intact until refill.

Total planned consumption (L)

Sum leg days × people × user-selected daily quantity.

Peak starting water carry (L)

Largest departure inventory.

Capacity gap at peak (L)

max(0, peak water − entered carrying capacity).

Water reserve remaining at final leg end (L)

Inventory after final planned consumption. The final block is funded through trip end even without a listed resupply.

Symbols and units
a
Legs: name, days, resupply at end yes or no
b
User-selected water per person per day (L)
c
People
d
Reserve above consumption per resupply block (%)
e
Available water-carry capacity (L)

Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.

Assumptions & limits

Assumptions & limits

  • A supplied-demand inventory scenario. It does not recommend hydration quantities, verify a water source or predict weather. Each planned resupply discards the prior block’s reserve accounting and resets to the new block target.
