THE NUMBERS, EXPLAINED
How to use this calculator.
Assumes records can be repacked freely across files and one task writes each output file. Compression and indivisible records can change the result.
Start with your inputs
Enter input file sizes (mb), target output file capacity (mb), concurrent output-writing tasks (count). Keep amounts in the units shown on each field. The example is a starting point, not a recommended value.
| Input | Example value |
|---|---|
| Input file sizes (MB) | 10,20,30 |
| Target output file capacity (MB) | 25 |
| Concurrent output-writing tasks (count) | 2 |
A worked example
With the example inputs above, input volume (mb) is 60. Change the inputs to explore your own scenario.
| Result | Example answer |
|---|---|
| Input volume (MB) | 60 |
| Output file count | 3 |
| Writing waves (count) | 2 |
| Final file size (MB) | 10 |
How this is calculated
Input volume (MB)
Sum input file sizes.
Output file count
Round total size divided by target size upward.
Writing waves (count)
Divide output files by concurrency and round upward.
Final file size (MB)
Remove full target-sized files from the total.
Symbols and units
- a
- Input file sizes (MB)
- b
- Target output file capacity (MB)
- c
- Concurrent output-writing tasks (count)
Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.
Assumptions and limits
Assumes records can be repacked freely across files and one task writes each output file. Compression and indivisible records can change the result.
Calculations use the values you enter. Blank or invalid inputs show an error instead of silently substituting zero. Results are displayed to useful precision; calculations retain the underlying numeric precision.
Questions about this tool
What does the result tell me?
Input volume (MB); Output file count; Writing waves (count); Final file size (MB). The result applies to the method and inputs described above. Check the units and assumptions before using it in a decision.
Why might another calculator differ?
Differences in units, rounding, timing or model definitions can produce different answers. Compare the input definitions and the method, rather than only the final number. For this tool: Assumes records can be repacked freely across files and one task writes each output file. Compression and indivisible records can change the result.
Are my inputs stored or sent to AI?
Calculations on this page happen in your browser. The separate AI question finder sends its submitted conversation to OpenAI; these calculator fields are not sent. Favourites and recent tool names are stored locally. A shared link contains the inputs you choose to include.
