THE NUMBERS, EXPLAINED
How to use this calculator.
Simple non-compounding carrying cost on each supplied age band, using 365 days per year. Recovery is a user-entered percentage of recorded stock value; selling costs and accounting rules are excluded.
Start with your inputs
Enter stock values (£), ages (days), annual holding cost (%), recovery value (%). Keep amounts in the units shown on each field. The example is a starting point, not a recommended value.
| Input | Example value |
|---|---|
| Stock values (£) | 1000,2000 |
| Ages (days) | 365,180 |
| Annual holding cost (%) | 20 |
| Recovery value (%) | 30 |
A worked example
With the example inputs above, accumulated holding cost (£) is 397.26. Change the inputs to explore your own scenario.
| Result | Example answer |
|---|---|
| Accumulated holding cost (£) | 397.26 |
| Recovery proceeds (£) | 900 |
| Unrecovered value plus holding (£) | 2,497.26 |
How this is calculated
Accumulated holding cost (£)
For each matched value and age: value × age/365 × c/100. Sum the costs.
Recovery proceeds (£)
sum(a) × d/100.
Unrecovered value plus holding (£)
sum(a) − recovery proceeds + accumulated holding cost.

Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.
Calculation steps and notation
sum(list) adds all entries in the list.
Assumptions and limits
Simple non-compounding carrying cost on each supplied age band, using 365 days per year. Recovery is a user-entered percentage of recorded stock value; selling costs and accounting rules are excluded.
Calculations use the values you enter. Blank or invalid inputs show an error instead of silently substituting zero. Results are displayed to useful precision; calculations retain the underlying numeric precision.
Questions about this tool
What does the result tell me?
Accumulated holding cost (£); Recovery proceeds (£); Unrecovered value plus holding (£). The result applies to the method and inputs described above. Check the units and assumptions before using it in a decision.
Why might another calculator differ?
Differences in units, rounding, timing or model definitions can produce different answers. Compare the input definitions and the method, rather than only the final number. For this tool: Simple non-compounding carrying cost on each supplied age band, using 365 days per year. Recovery is a user-entered percentage of recorded stock value; selling costs and accounting rules are excluded.
Are my inputs stored or sent to AI?
Calculations on this page happen in your browser. The separate AI question finder sends its submitted conversation to OpenAI; these calculator fields are not sent. Favourites and recent tool names are stored locally. A shared link contains the inputs you choose to include.
