THE NUMBERS, EXPLAINED
How to use this calculator.
Rounds staffing up independently for each interval using your measured average handling time and utilization target. It does not predict random queueing or breaks.
Start with your inputs
Enter forecast arrivals by interval, interval length (minutes), measured handling time (seconds), target staff utilization (%). Keep amounts in the units shown on each field. The example is a starting point, not a recommended value.
| Input | Example value |
|---|---|
| Forecast arrivals by interval | 100,150,80 |
| Interval length (minutes) | 30 |
| Measured handling time (seconds) | 60 |
| Target staff utilization (%) | 80 |
A worked example
With the example inputs above, staff by interval is 5, 7, 4. Change the inputs to explore your own scenario.
| Result | Example answer |
|---|---|
| Staff by interval | 5, 7, 4 |
| Peak staff | 7 |
| Scheduled staff-hours | 8 |
How this is calculated
Staff by interval
For each interval, round up arrivals × handling seconds ÷ interval seconds ÷ utilization fraction.
Peak staff
Maximum of the interval staffing counts.
Scheduled staff-hours
Sum interval staff counts × interval hours.
Symbols and units
- a
- Forecast arrivals by interval
- b
- Interval length (minutes)
- c
- Measured handling time (seconds)
- d
- Target staff utilization (%)
Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.
Assumptions and limits
Rounds staffing up independently for each interval using your measured average handling time and utilization target. It does not predict random queueing or breaks.
Calculations use the values you enter. Blank or invalid inputs show an error instead of silently substituting zero. Results are displayed to useful precision; calculations retain the underlying numeric precision.
Questions about this tool
What does the result tell me?
Staff by interval; Peak staff; Scheduled staff-hours. The result applies to the method and inputs described above. Check the units and assumptions before using it in a decision.
Why might another calculator differ?
Differences in units, rounding, timing or model definitions can produce different answers. Compare the input definitions and the method, rather than only the final number. For this tool: Rounds staffing up independently for each interval using your measured average handling time and utilization target. It does not predict random queueing or breaks.
Are my inputs stored or sent to AI?
Calculations on this page happen in your browser. The separate AI question finder sends its submitted conversation to OpenAI; these calculator fields are not sent. Favourites and recent tool names are stored locally. A shared link contains the inputs you choose to include.
