Food modified-atmosphere gas inventory calculator

Calculate gross gas requirement and whole cylinders required with your own figures.

Your numbers

Use the units shown. Results update as you change valid inputs.

Use gross gas requirement and whole cylinders required to compare changes to your inputs. The method and limits below explain the scope.

Examples

Examples

Try the starting example

Packages per hour (count/hour)
1000
Fill gas volume per package (litres)
0.4
Measured unrecovered gas fraction
0.1
Run duration (hours)
8
Usable cylinder gas volume at same reference conditions (litres)
5000
Gross gas requirement (litres)
3,555.555556
Whole cylinders required (count)
1

Try another scenario

Packages per hour (count/hour)
1500
Fill gas volume per package (litres)
0.5
Measured unrecovered gas fraction
0.2
Run duration (hours)
6
Usable cylinder gas volume at same reference conditions (litres)
4000
Gross gas requirement (litres)
5625
Whole cylinders required (count)
2
Calculation method

Calculation method

Gross gas requirement (litres)

Throughput×fill volume×duration/(1−loss fraction).

Whole cylinders required (count)

ceil(gross requirement/usable cylinder volume).

Symbols and units
a
Packages per hour (count/hour)
b
Fill gas volume per package (litres)
c
Measured unrecovered gas fraction
d
Run duration (hours)
e
Usable cylinder gas volume at same reference conditions (litres)

Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.

Assumptions & limits

Assumptions & limits

  • User-specified fill-gas volume and measured loss; no atmosphere composition recommendation. Supported limits: All numeric inputs and computed intermediates must remain finite. Supported numeric input magnitude is zero or 1e-12 through 1e12 in absolute value; reject values outside this bounded range. All lists/JSON record tables are limited to 100 records unless a stricter bound is stated; reject malformed record arity and wrong member types. Loss fraction in [0,1); volume units share identical user-stated pressure/temperature reference; cylinder usable volume>0.
