THE NUMBERS, EXPLAINED

How to use this calculator.

12-tone equal temperament, ideal fret geometry only (no compensation, camber, string stiffness or action). Distances are measured from the nut for frets 1 through frets, excluding the nut.

Start with your inputs

Enter scale length (mm), number of frets (1-48). Keep amounts in the units shown on each field. The example is a starting point, not a recommended value.

InputExample value
Scale length (mm)650
Number of frets (1-48)22

A worked example

With the example inputs above, nut-to-fret distances (mm) is 36.481697, 70.915833, 103.41733, 134.094658, 163.0502, 190.380592, 216.177047, 240.525659, 263.507688, 285.199834, 305.674494, 325, 343.240848, 360.457917, 376.708665, 392.047329, 406.5251, 420.190296, 433.088524, 445.262829, 456.753844, 467.599917. How this is calculated

Nut-to-fret distances (mm)

nut_distances_mm (millimeters array): for fret n = 1..frets, scale_mm * (1 - 2^(-n/12)).

Remaining string length (mm)

last_fret_remaining_mm (millimeters): scale_mm - nut_distances_mm[last] = scale_mm * 2^(-frets/12), the distance from the last fret to the bridge.

Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.

Assumptions and limits

12-tone equal temperament, ideal fret geometry only (no compensation, camber, string stiffness or action). Distances are measured from the nut for frets 1 through frets, excluding the nut.

Calculations use the values you enter. Blank or invalid inputs show an error instead of silently substituting zero. Results are displayed to useful precision; calculations retain the underlying numeric precision.

Questions about this tool

What does the result tell me?

Nut-to-fret distances (mm); Remaining string length (mm). The result applies to the method and inputs described above. Check the units and assumptions before using it in a decision.

Why might another calculator differ?

Differences in units, rounding, timing or model definitions can produce different answers. Compare the input definitions and the method, rather than only the final number. For this tool: 12-tone equal temperament, ideal fret geometry only (no compensation, camber, string stiffness or action). Distances are measured from the nut for frets 1 through frets, excluding the nut.

Are my inputs stored or sent to AI?

Calculations on this page happen in your browser. The separate AI question finder sends its submitted conversation to OpenAI; these calculator fields are not sent. Favourites and recent tool names are stored locally. A shared link contains the inputs you choose to include.
