Grocery checkout basket throughput calculator

Calculate checkout completion schedule and mean wait with your own figures.

Your numbers

Use the units shown. Results update as you change valid inputs.

Use checkout completion schedule and mean wait to compare changes to your inputs. The method and limits below explain the scope.

Examples

Examples

Try the starting example

Baskets [arrival minute, item count]; enter JSON
[[0,10],[0.5,20],[1,5]]
Scan time (seconds/item)
3
Payment time (seconds/basket)
30
Checkout lanes (count)
1
Checkout completion schedule (JSON)
[{"item":1,"server":1,"start":0,"end":1,"wait":0,"abandoned":false},{"item":2,"server":1,"start":1,"end":2.5,"wait":0.5,"abandoned":false},{"item":3,"server":1,"start":2.5,"end":3.25,"wait":1.5,"abandoned":false}]
Mean wait (minutes)
0.666667

Try another scenario

Baskets [arrival minute, item count]; enter JSON
[[0,15],[0,25],[0.5,8],[1,10]]
Scan time (seconds/item)
2.5
Payment time (seconds/basket)
40
Checkout lanes (count)
2
Checkout completion schedule (JSON)
[{"item":1,"server":1,"start":0,"end":1.29166666667,"wait":0,"abandoned":false},{"item":2,"server":2,"start":0,"end":1.70833333333,"wait":0,"abandoned":false},{"item":3,"server":1,"start":1.29166666667,"end":2.29166666667,"wait":0.791666666667,"abandoned":false},{"item":4,"server":2,"start":1.70833333333,"end":2.79166666667,"wait":0.708333333333,"abandoned":false}]
Mean wait (minutes)
0.375
Calculation method

Calculation method

Checkout completion schedule (JSON)

Basket service minutes=(items×scan seconds+payment seconds)/60; FCFS earliest-free lane.

Mean wait (minutes)

Mean simulated start−arrival.

Symbols and units
a
Baskets [arrival minute, item count]; enter JSON
b
Scan time (seconds/item)
c
Payment time (seconds/basket)
d
Checkout lanes (count)

Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.

Assumptions & limits

Assumptions & limits

  • Measured scan seconds/item and payment seconds/basket, with FCFS identical checkout lanes. Supported limits: All numeric inputs and computed intermediates must remain finite. Supported numeric input magnitude is zero or 1e-12 through 1e12 in absolute value; reject values outside this bounded range. All lists/JSON record tables are limited to 100 records unless a stricter bound is stated; reject malformed record arity and wrong member types. All numeric values must be finite. Lists contain at most 100 records; required lists must be nonempty. Rates, probabilities and fractions are entered as fractions, not percentages; fractions must be between 0 and 1. Use a single consistent user-selected currency for all amounts; no exchange-rate conversion.
Are these inputs private?
