Hiking ascent distribution calculator

Calculate ascent by distance zone and descent by distance zone with your own figures.

Your numbers

Use the units shown. Results update as you change valid inputs.

Use ascent by distance zone and descent by distance zone to compare changes to your inputs. The method and limits below explain the scope.

Calculation method

Calculation method

Ascent by distance zone (m)

Split each linear measured profile segment at distance-zone boundaries and accumulate only positive elevation changes.

Descent by distance zone (m)

Accumulate the magnitude of negative changes after the same split.

Total measured ascent (m)

Sum zone ascent.

Total measured descent (m)

Sum zone descent.

Steepest positive segment grade (%)

max(0,elevation rise/(1000×distance km)×100) across measured segments.

Symbols and units
a
Distance km, elevation m, one measured point per line
b
Distance-zone boundaries km, spanning the whole profile

Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.

Assumptions & limits

Assumptions & limits

  • Summarises an entered elevation profile using linear interpolation between measurements. GPS noise and sparse sampling affect ascent; no trail conditions, travel times or route safety are inferred.
