Laser kerf joint compensation calculator

Calculate tab vector width and slot vector width with your own figures.

Your numbers

Use the units shown. Results update as you change valid inputs.

Use tab vector width and slot vector width to compare changes to your inputs. The method and limits below explain the scope.

Examples

Examples

Try the starting example

Desired physical tab width (mm)
10
Desired physical slot width (mm)
10
Measured total kerf width (mm)
0.2
Extra physical clearance at slot (mm)
0.1
Tab vector width (mm)
10.2
Slot vector width (mm)
9.9

Try another scenario

Desired physical tab width (mm)
20
Desired physical slot width (mm)
20
Measured total kerf width (mm)
0.4
Extra physical clearance at slot (mm)
0.2
Tab vector width (mm)
20.4
Slot vector width (mm)
19.8
Calculation method

Calculation method

Tab vector width (mm)

Desired finished tab width + total kerf.

Slot vector width (mm)

Desired finished slot width + extra clearance − total kerf.

Symbols and units
a
Desired physical tab width (mm)
b
Desired physical slot width (mm)
c
Measured total kerf width (mm)
d
Extra physical clearance at slot (mm)

Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.

Assumptions & limits

Assumptions & limits

  • For a centreline cut, an external tab loses one total kerf width while an internal slot gains one. The entered clearance is added once to the slot. Test a coupon; taper, material and machine settings are excluded.
