Museum expected occupancy from dwell samples calculator

Calculate expected occupancy and uniform slot bound and maximum expected occupancy with your own figures.

Your numbers

Use the units shown. Results update as you change valid inputs.

Use expected occupancy and uniform slot bound and maximum expected occupancy to compare changes to your inputs. The method and limits below explain the scope.

Calculation method

Calculation method

Expected occupancy and uniform slot bound (JSON)

For each prior slot multiply entries by fraction of dwell samples exceeding elapsed time. Sum. Uniform bound=floor(desired occupancy/max expected overlap coefficient).

Maximum expected occupancy (visitors)

Maximum slot-start expected occupancy.

Symbols and units
a
Observed dwell durations (minutes)
b
Entry slot spacing (minutes)
c
User desired occupancy (visitors)
d
Planned entries by slot (counts)

Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.

Assumptions & limits

Assumptions & limits

  • Empirical dwell samples define expected occupancy at slot starts; the uniform slot bound is an expectation calculation, not a guaranteed crowd limit. Supported limits: All numeric inputs and computed intermediates must remain finite. Supported numeric input magnitude is zero or 1e-12 through 1e12 in absolute value; reject values outside this bounded range. All lists/JSON record tables are limited to 100 records unless a stricter bound is stated; reject malformed record arity and wrong member types. Positive dwell samples; spacing>0; nonnegative integer entries; <=100 slots; equal-weight dwell samples assumed independent of entry slot.
