THE NUMBERS, EXPLAINED
How to use this calculator.
Groups match in order. A cold visit transfers every asset once. Repeat traffic is an expected-byte scenario based on supplied cache hits, excluding request headers, revalidation and compression changes.
Start with your inputs
Enter asset counts by group, compressed bytes per asset in each group, repeat-visit cache hit percentages by group. Keep amounts in the units shown on each field. The example is a starting point, not a recommended value.
| Input | Example value |
|---|---|
| Asset counts by group | 1,3 |
| Compressed bytes per asset in each group | 1000,2000 |
| Repeat-visit cache hit percentages by group | 0,50 |
A worked example
With the example inputs above, cold transfer (bytes) is 7,000. Change the inputs to explore your own scenario.
| Result | Example answer |
|---|---|
| Cold transfer (bytes) | 7,000 |
| Expected repeat transfer (bytes) | 4,000 |
| Expected bytes saved | 3,000 |
How this is calculated
Cold transfer (bytes)
Sum count × compressed bytes over all groups.
Expected repeat transfer (bytes)
Sum count × bytes × (1−cache hit percentage/100).
Expected bytes saved
Cold bytes minus repeat bytes.
Symbols and units
- a
- Asset counts by group
- b
- Compressed bytes per asset in each group
- c
- Repeat-visit cache hit percentages by group
Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.
Assumptions and limits
Groups match in order. A cold visit transfers every asset once. Repeat traffic is an expected-byte scenario based on supplied cache hits, excluding request headers, revalidation and compression changes.
Calculations use the values you enter. Blank or invalid inputs show an error instead of silently substituting zero. Results are displayed to useful precision; calculations retain the underlying numeric precision.
Questions about this tool
What does the result tell me?
Cold transfer (bytes); Expected repeat transfer (bytes); Expected bytes saved. The result applies to the method and inputs described above. Check the units and assumptions before using it in a decision.
Why might another calculator differ?
Differences in units, rounding, timing or model definitions can produce different answers. Compare the input definitions and the method, rather than only the final number. For this tool: Groups match in order. A cold visit transfers every asset once. Repeat traffic is an expected-byte scenario based on supplied cache hits, excluding request headers, revalidation and compression changes.
Are my inputs stored or sent to AI?
Calculations on this page happen in your browser. The separate AI question finder sends its submitted conversation to OpenAI; these calculator fields are not sent. Favourites and recent tool names are stored locally. A shared link contains the inputs you choose to include.
