THE NUMBERS, EXPLAINED
How to use this calculator.
Chapters can span days. The timetable uses constant daily effort and preserves chapter order.
Start with your inputs
Enter estimated chapter reading times (minutes), available reading days (count), daily reading budget (minutes). Keep amounts in the units shown on each field. The example is a starting point, not a recommended value.
| Input | Example value |
|---|---|
| Estimated chapter reading times (minutes) | 20,40,30 |
| Available reading days (count) | 3 |
| Daily reading budget (minutes) | 25 |
A worked example
With the example inputs above, total reading effort (minutes) is 90. Change the inputs to explore your own scenario.
| Result | Example answer |
|---|---|
| Total reading effort (minutes) | 90 |
| Required daily effort (minutes/day) | 30 |
| Budget shortfall (minutes) | 15 |
| Chapter finish days at entered budget | 1, 3, 4 |
How this is calculated
Total reading effort (minutes)
Add chapter effort.
Required daily effort (minutes/day)
Divide total effort evenly across available days.
Budget shortfall (minutes)
Subtract available reading budget from effort.
Chapter finish days at entered budget
Round cumulative chapter effort divided by daily budget upward.
Symbols and units
- a
- Estimated chapter reading times (minutes)
- b
- Available reading days (count)
- c
- Daily reading budget (minutes)
Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.
Assumptions and limits
Chapters can span days. The timetable uses constant daily effort and preserves chapter order.
Calculations use the values you enter. Blank or invalid inputs show an error instead of silently substituting zero. Results are displayed to useful precision; calculations retain the underlying numeric precision.
Questions about this tool
What does the result tell me?
Total reading effort (minutes); Required daily effort (minutes/day); Budget shortfall (minutes); Chapter finish days at entered budget. The result applies to the method and inputs described above. Check the units and assumptions before using it in a decision.
Why might another calculator differ?
Differences in units, rounding, timing or model definitions can produce different answers. Compare the input definitions and the method, rather than only the final number. For this tool: Chapters can span days. The timetable uses constant daily effort and preserves chapter order.
Are my inputs stored or sent to AI?
Calculations on this page happen in your browser. The separate AI question finder sends its submitted conversation to OpenAI; these calculator fields are not sent. Favourites and recent tool names are stored locally. A shared link contains the inputs you choose to include.
