THE NUMBERS, EXPLAINED
How to use this calculator.
Every lane can execute an entire batch independently; stages within a batch are sequential and batches have equal cycle times. Part-filled final batches use a full cycle.
Start with your inputs
Enter samples to process (count), samples per batch (count), sequential stage durations per batch (minutes), independent fully staffed processing lanes (count). Keep amounts in the units shown on each field. The example is a starting point, not a recommended value.
| Input | Example value |
|---|---|
| Samples to process (count) | 100 |
| Samples per batch (count) | 20 |
| Sequential stage durations per batch (minutes) | 10,20,5 |
| Independent fully staffed processing lanes (count) | 2 |
A worked example
With the example inputs above, batches required (count) is 5. Change the inputs to explore your own scenario.
| Result | Example answer |
|---|---|
| Batches required (count) | 5 |
| Slowest stage (1-based position) | 2 |
| Completion duration (minutes) | 105 |
How this is calculated
Batches required (count)
Round samples divided by batch capacity up.
Slowest stage (1-based position)
Locate the longest stage; first position wins ties.
Completion duration (minutes)
Multiply parallel batch waves by total stage duration.
Symbols and units

- Samples to process (count)
- b
- Samples per batch (count)
- c
- Sequential stage durations per batch (minutes)
- d
- Independent fully staffed processing lanes (count)
Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.
Assumptions and limits
Every lane can execute an entire batch independently; stages within a batch are sequential and batches have equal cycle times. Part-filled final batches use a full cycle.
Calculations use the values you enter. Blank or invalid inputs show an error instead of silently substituting zero. Results are displayed to useful precision; calculations retain the underlying numeric precision.
Questions about this tool
What does the result tell me?
Batches required (count); Slowest stage (1-based position); Completion duration (minutes). The result applies to the method and inputs described above. Check the units and assumptions before using it in a decision.
Why might another calculator differ?
Differences in units, rounding, timing or model definitions can produce different answers. Compare the input definitions and the method, rather than only the final number. For this tool: Every lane can execute an entire batch independently; stages within a batch are sequential and batches have equal cycle times. Part-filled final batches use a full cycle.
Are my inputs stored or sent to AI?
Calculations on this page happen in your browser. The separate AI question finder sends its submitted conversation to OpenAI; these calculator fields are not sent. Favourites and recent tool names are stored locally. A shared link contains the inputs you choose to include.
