Resistor colour code calculator

Calculate resistance and tolerance with your own figures.

Your numbers

Use the units shown. Results update as you change valid inputs.

Use resistance and tolerance to compare changes to your inputs. The method and limits below explain the scope.

Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.

Calculation steps and notation

The first two colour bands give decimal digits; the third is a power-of-ten multiplier (gold 10^−1, silver 10^−2). Resistance = (10 × first digit + second digit) × multiplier. The fourth band supplies tolerance: brown 1%, red 2%, green 0.5%, blue 0.25%, violet 0.1%, grey 0.05%, gold 5%, silver 10%. Digit colours in order 0–9 are black, brown, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, grey, white.

Assumptions & limits

Assumptions & limits

  • Supports a four-band resistance code: two digits, multiplier and tolerance. Read from the digit end.
