THE NUMBERS, EXPLAINED
How to use this calculator.
Three non-empty equal-length numeric arrays with at most 1000 entries; bars >= 0, beats_per_bar and bpm > 0. Each BPM describes the explicitly entered beats per bar, so compound meter needs no implicit conversion.
Start with your inputs
Enter bars per section (comma-separated), beats per bar per section (comma-separated), tempo per section (bpm, comma-separated). Keep amounts in the units shown on each field. The example is a starting point, not a recommended value.
| Input | Example value |
|---|---|
| Bars per section (comma-separated) | 8,16,8 |
| Beats per bar per section (comma-separated) | 4,4,3 |
| Tempo per section (BPM, comma-separated) | 120,120,90 |
A worked example
With the example inputs above, section durations (s) is 16, 32, 16. Change the inputs to explore your own scenario.
| Result | Example answer |
|---|---|
| Section durations (s) | 16, 32, 16 |
| Total duration (s) | 64 |
How this is calculated
Section durations (s)
section_seconds (seconds array): for each section i, bars[i] * beats_per_bar[i] * 60 / bpm[i].
Total duration (s)
total_seconds (seconds): the sum of section_seconds.
Symbols and units
- bars
- Bars per section (comma-separated)
- beats_per_bar
- Beats per bar per section (comma-separated)
- bpm
- Tempo per section (BPM, comma-separated)
Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.
Assumptions and limits
Three non-empty equal-length numeric arrays with at most 1000 entries; bars >= 0, beats_per_bar and bpm > 0. Each BPM describes the explicitly entered beats per bar, so compound meter needs no implicit conversion.
Calculations use the values you enter. Blank or invalid inputs show an error instead of silently substituting zero. Results are displayed to useful precision; calculations retain the underlying numeric precision.
Questions about this tool
What does the result tell me?
Section durations (s); Total duration (s). The result applies to the method and inputs described above. Check the units and assumptions before using it in a decision.
Why might another calculator differ?
Differences in units, rounding, timing or model definitions can produce different answers. Compare the input definitions and the method, rather than only the final number. For this tool: Three non-empty equal-length numeric arrays with at most 1000 entries; bars >= 0, beats_per_bar and bpm > 0. Each BPM describes the explicitly entered beats per bar, so compound meter needs no implicit conversion.
Are my inputs stored or sent to AI?
Calculations on this page happen in your browser. The separate AI question finder sends its submitted conversation to OpenAI; these calculator fields are not sent. Favourites and recent tool names are stored locally. A shared link contains the inputs you choose to include.
