THE NUMBERS, EXPLAINED
How to use this calculator.
Each physical directed segment appears once per route. Identical identifiers must carry the same distance. Opposite directions should use different IDs if treated separately.
Start with your inputs
Enter segment identifiers on route a, segment distances on route a (km), segment identifiers on route b, segment distances on route b (km). Keep amounts in the units shown on each field. The example is a starting point, not a recommended value.
| Input | Example value |
|---|---|
| Segment identifiers on route A | 1,2,3 |
| Segment distances on route A (km) | 2,3,5 |
| Segment identifiers on route B | 2,3,4 |
| Segment distances on route B (km) | 3,5,4 |
A worked example
With the example inputs above, shared route distance (km) is 8. Change the inputs to explore your own scenario.
| Result | Example answer |
|---|---|
| Shared route distance (km) | 8 |
| Route A overlap (%) | 80 |
| Route B overlap (%) | 66.666667 |
How this is calculated
Shared route distance (km)
Sum route A segment lengths whose identifiers also occur on route B.
Route A overlap (%)
Divide shared length by route A total.
Route B overlap (%)
Divide shared length by route B total.
Symbols and units
- a
- Segment identifiers on route A
- b
- Segment distances on route A (km)
- c
- Segment identifiers on route B
- d
- Segment distances on route B (km)
Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.
Assumptions and limits
Each physical directed segment appears once per route. Identical identifiers must carry the same distance. Opposite directions should use different IDs if treated separately.
Calculations use the values you enter. Blank or invalid inputs show an error instead of silently substituting zero. Results are displayed to useful precision; calculations retain the underlying numeric precision.
Questions about this tool
What does the result tell me?
Shared route distance (km); Route A overlap (%); Route B overlap (%). The result applies to the method and inputs described above. Check the units and assumptions before using it in a decision.
Why might another calculator differ?
Differences in units, rounding, timing or model definitions can produce different answers. Compare the input definitions and the method, rather than only the final number. For this tool: Each physical directed segment appears once per route. Identical identifiers must carry the same distance. Opposite directions should use different IDs if treated separately.
Are my inputs stored or sent to AI?
Calculations on this page happen in your browser. The separate AI question finder sends its submitted conversation to OpenAI; these calculator fields are not sent. Favourites and recent tool names are stored locally. A shared link contains the inputs you choose to include.
