THE NUMBERS, EXPLAINED
How to use this calculator.
Each template produces a separate set of files with equal per-record size. Packs consecutive records by the smaller record-count and byte cap. File ranges are the same for every template. At most 1,000 batches per template are displayed.
Start with your inputs
Enter data records, templates generated per record, bytes per rendered record per template, maximum output file bytes, fixed bytes per file, maximum records per output file. Keep amounts in the units shown on each field. The example is a starting point, not a recommended value.
| Input | Example value |
|---|---|
| Data records | 105 |
| Templates generated per record | 3 |
| Bytes per rendered record per template | 1000 |
| Maximum output file bytes | 50000 |
| Fixed bytes per file | 1000 |
| Maximum records per output file | 20 |
A worked example
With the example inputs above, records per full file is 20. Change the inputs to explore your own scenario.
| Result | Example answer |
|---|---|
| Records per full file | 20 |
| Files per template | 6 |
| Total output files | 18 |
| Record ranges per template | 1–20, 21–40, 41–60, 61–80, 81–100, 101–105 |
| Bytes in final file per template | 6,000 |
How this is calculated
Records per full file
Minimum of record cap and roundDown((byte cap − fixed file bytes) ÷ bytes per record).
Files per template
Round up record count ÷ capacity. Zero records produce no files.
Total output files
Files per template × template count.
Record ranges per template
List consecutive inclusive 1-based record ranges for each template.
Bytes in final file per template
Fixed bytes + final batch record count × bytes per record; zero when no files exist.

Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.
Assumptions and limits
Each template produces a separate set of files with equal per-record size. Packs consecutive records by the smaller record-count and byte cap. File ranges are the same for every template. At most 1,000 batches per template are displayed.
Calculations use the values you enter. Blank or invalid inputs show an error instead of silently substituting zero. Results are displayed to useful precision; calculations retain the underlying numeric precision.
Questions about this tool
What does the result tell me?
Records per full file; Files per template; Total output files; Record ranges per template; Bytes in final file per template. The result applies to the method and inputs described above. Check the units and assumptions before using it in a decision.
Why might another calculator differ?
Differences in units, rounding, timing or model definitions can produce different answers. Compare the input definitions and the method, rather than only the final number. For this tool: Each template produces a separate set of files with equal per-record size. Packs consecutive records by the smaller record-count and byte cap. File ranges are the same for every template. At most 1,000 batches per template are displayed.
