Symbols and units
a
Dataset

Use the units shown. A list keeps the order in which you enter its values. The symbol ^ means “raised to the power of”.

Calculation steps and notation

variance(list, sample): calculate the mean and sum the squared deviations from it. Divide by n−1 when sample is true, or n when false. A standard deviation is the square root of the corresponding variance.

sqrt(x) is the non-negative square root of x.

Assumptions & limits

Assumptions & limits

  • Sample variance divides squared deviations by n−1; population variance divides by n. Lists support up to 1,000 finite values.
